Welcome

As we journey through 1 Peter together, we want to equip you as households to have conversations with one another about the sermon series. Each week, there will be a blog post featuring a brief recap of the sermon passage for the week, a few quick ideas for how your family can dive deeper into the passage together during the week, and a challenge for you to complete and share using the hashtag #1peterchallenge.

Recap

1 Peter 1:10-12 By Lindsey

Ellie’s first-grade teacher likes to say, “If you can read, you can change the world.” Because of this, Ellie and all her classmates know and have experienced how stories can change us. A good story gives us the chance to understand something in a new or different way, or to think about a perspective we might never have otherwise thought about. The story of the gospel is a story, but it is also much more than that. It is the only story that can completely change us from the inside out. In 1 Peter 1:10-12, we see how the Holy Spirit is at work whenever the Gospel is preached, both in the words of the one preaching and in the hearts of those listening. This should fill us with hope! Though we don’t know how our stories will turn out, we can trust in the God who writes our stories—that they will be for our good and his glory.

God’s Story: Prophets is a kid’s-level overview of the prophets and their message to God’s people.

How to Read The Prophets from The Bible Project is a short video overview of what Biblical Prophets are, great for older kids, teenagers, and adults.

Going Deeper With…

Preschoolers

Read some stories of the Prophets from children’s Bibles or storybooks you have at home.
Here is one to get you started:

As you read or after, ask questions like this:

  • Peter said that what the prophets like (insert name here) wrote is good news for you & me. As we listen to this story, let’s see if we can hear the Good News.

  • I wonder what it was like for God’s people to hear this prophet’s words.

  • I wonder what these words make you think of.

  • I wonder who you can speak God’s words to.

Elementary Kids

Read 1 Peter 1:10-12 in a child-friendly version of the Bible (like the NIrV).

  • Write down the names of as many prophets as you can think of.

  • Who gave the prophets words to say? (look at vs. 12)

  • According to 2 Timothy 1:14, if you follow Jesus, who lives inside of you?

  • I wonder what it means to you that the same Holy Spirit who spoke to God’s people by the Prophets lives inside of you.

BONUS: We celebrated the sending of the Holy Spirit on Sunday at Pentecost. Pray and thank God for the gift of his Holy Spirit. Ask him to help you preach his good news to the people you know.

Middle & High Schoolers

Read 1 Peter 1:3-12 in the New Living Translation.

  • Peter says that “this Good News has been announced to you by those who preached in the power of the Holy Spirit sent from heaven.” Who has announced the Good News of Jesus to you? Praise God for that person!

  • Sunday, May 31 is Pentecost Sunday—the day we remember the gift of the Holy Spirit (Acts 2). Talk with your family or with a friend: what difference does the Holy Spirit make in the Christian life?

  • Read Isaiah 52:13—53:12. This was spoken and written by the prophet Isaiah 700 years before Jesus was born! Thank God for doing his perfect work in his perfect timing.

1 Peter Challenge

#1peterchallenge: As God’s people, we carry stories of his grace with us. As a family, share a Good News meal this week, sharing stories of God’s grace in your life—preach the good news to one another. Then use the attached worksheet to help your family come up with good news stories you can share with those in your life who don’t know Jesus. Who is God inviting you to preach the good news to?  Share a photo of your good news dinner with the hashtag #1peterchallenge.
